Editor's Notebook: Mayor Addresses Trash Hauling, Cub Explains Missing Ad

Oakdale's trash hauling system not likely to change in the near future, officials say

Trash Hauling Unlikely to Change Soon: Oakdale residents needn’t brace for a fight over trash hauling anytime soon like the one that played out in Maplewood last year. Mayor Carmen Sarrack and city council members said they’d prefer not to consider going to a single hauler in the city, at a workshop meeting Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Oakdale City Hall.

“As long as I’m mayor, which is three more years, I really don’t want to see it come up,” Sarrack said. “It’s a really time consuming issue for staff, for council.”

Council member Stan Karwoski said the council looked seriously at the option three years ago.

“The vast majority of residents just aren’t ready for it,” Karwoski said. “It’s just a divisive issue … There’re other good things we can do.”

Cub Ads are Coming Back: After getting reports that residents in the Oakdale area didn’t get their Cub Foods ad in the Pioneer Press as usual, the grocer is attributing the issue to a mechanical glitch.

“There seemed to be a widespread delivery issue in the community of Oakdale, and they hope to have it resolved quickly,” said company spokeswoman Lilia Rodriguez.

The company still plans to deliver its ads through the paper, she said.
