Lumberjack Days Organizer Dave Eckberg Charged with Felony Theft

After months of investigation by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Dave Eckberg has been charged with 10 felony counts stemming from unpaid bills to Lumberjack Days vendors.

After months of investigation by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Dave Eckberg has been charged with 10 felony counts stemming from unpaid bills to Lumberjack Days vendors.

Washington County Attorney Pete Orput announced this morning that his office filed criminal charges against Eckberg, 61, of Stillwater, “in the 2011 controversy over the Lumberjack Days Festival in Stillwater.”

Eckberg, the organizer of the event, was charged with five counts of theft by check and five counts of issuance of a dishonored check.

“This has been a careful, painstaking investigation that has required the issuance of multiple search warrants and the review of boxes and boxes of documents,” Orput said. “Frankly, the victims deserve more than the criminal justice system can provide them. However, my office will do all in its power to bring some amount of justice to the victims of Mr. Eckberg’s duplicity in his business dealings.”

Orput said the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Stillwater Police Department put an extraordinary effort into this investigation.

“They have devoted great resources to produce this successful product,” Orput said.

According to the complaint:

Eckberg allegedly failed to make good on checks he wrote for the purchase of beer at the festival, for services rendered by a staging and lighting company and for labor provided by Stillwater Blue Line Boosters.

The complaint states that when the checks were written there were insufficient funds in the accounts to cover the checks.

Eckberg requested the recipients to hold the checks pending sufficient funds being place into the accounts, the complaint states. In the meantime, records showed, Eckberg deposited and then transferred in excess of $40,000 from the Lumberjack Festival and St. Croix Events accounts into his and his wife’s personal accounts.

This sum was sufficient to cover the outstanding debt, but according to the complaint, Eckberg continued to tell the victims there were insufficient funds in the account and to hold the checks.

In the context of this legal process, it would be nice if the city could take ownership of the name of the festival, as (despite the bad rap from Eckberg's rip-off's of venders) Lumberjack Days had a lot of positives to it, such that resurrecting the event under competent management might be a good thing for Stillwater

I agree Dr. Saeger. Lumberjack days is our town festival and needs to resurrected. Just curious, did the city of Stillwater sell the rights to LJD to Mr Eckberg? As cities sell parking meter rights?

A little more info: "According to Washington County prosecutors, Eckberg deposited and then transferred more than $40,000 from the Lumberjack Festival and St. Croix Events accounts into his and his wife’s personal accounts. The money was enough to cover the outstanding debt, but Eckberg continued to tell the victims there were insufficient funds in the account and to hold the checks, according to prosecutors."
