UPDATED: Officials Say Man Suspected in Homicide Case, Dies in Car Crash is Not from Oakdale
Further investigation reveals the man was not from Oakdale.
Updated (Feb. 1, 2013, 1:45 p.m.): After further investigation, officials have confirmed that a homicide suspect who died early Friday morning in a car crash in Waseca County was not from Oakdale.
Officials initially reported that an Oakdale man was involved in a high-speed chase after the car he was driving was seen fleeing the scene where a dead body was found.
During the chase the man's car flipped into a field and he died at the scene. Investigators believe the 46-year-old man might be connected to a homicide in Austin that occurred early Friday morning.
Jill Oliveira, a spokeswoman of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, later told Oakdale Patch that they no longer believe the car crash victim and homicide suspect was from Oakdale.
"Our preliminary investigation pointed to that information, but further information developed through the investigation has led investigators to believe that that is not the case," Oliveira said. "I can tell you that they believed that to be the case based on information immediately available to them."
Oliveira could not yet confirm the man's city of residence.
Police found the body of a male victim — who appeared to have suffered from head trauma — in the front yard around 4 a.m., according to the Austin Daily Herald.
A neighbor reportedly heard yelling at 3 a.m. The suspect was seen leaving in a red Saab from a home where the body was found, according to the DPS.
The chase began in Austin and ended south of Waseca when the man's car lost control. The man was ejected from his car and died.
The man's name will not be released until family is notified.
Speeds exceeded 130 miles per hour and the chase spanned 50 miles. Agencies from Freeborn, Waseca and Mower counties assisted the state patrol in the chase.
The homicide is under investigation by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Austin Police Department. The State Patrol is investigating the chase and subsequent car crash.
