Nation’s Leading Senior Care Franchise Provides Independence, Longevity and Quality of Life

Oakdale – As more than 70 million Americans will reach age 65 in the next two decades, the need for in-home senior care continues to soar. Local entrepreneurs, and sisters, Mary Scundi and Jennifer Olesen are lending a helping hand by launching a local home care agency to meet the needs of residents of Oakdale, Maplewood, Lake Elmo and the surrounding communities.

As part of the nation’s leading franchise specializing in comprehensive home care for seniors, new mothers and other individuals needing recuperative and continuing care, Home Helpers & Direct Link of the Twin Cities began serving Oakdale residents in July 2012.

Scundi has a background in marketing and business development and worked in customer service as a gate agent for Northwest Airlines for more than 20 years. Olesen has extensive experience in business operations, finance and human resources. The two worked in a prominent nursing home in Roseville for several years when they were teenagers and young adults. More recently, the two sisters had firsthand experience as caregivers for their mother when she was in the final stage of battling lung cancer. It was during that time that they realized how fortunate they were to have a large family to share the responsibility of caring for her. The realization that not all families have that luxury, combined with their desire to own a rewarding business that gives back to the community by helping seniors and their families, led Scundi and Olesen to Home Helpers.

The sisters then decided to set up their home office at their father’s house in Arden Hills where they grew up, allowing them to work and also spend time with their father. They recognize this as a unique opportunity and also understand what other families are going through as they “practice what they preach,” knowing that not all families have this privilege to be with their aging loved ones on a daily basis.

“We strive to provide the same quality of care to others that we give to our own father,” Scundi said. “We joke that he is our ‘senior partner’ and our first client. Other clients can feel comfortable knowing that we understand what they’re going through and that we’re here to help in every way that we can.”

Home Helpers is the nation’s leading care franchise specializing in non-medical, companionship, personal care and medical services for seniors, new mothers and those recovering from illness or injury.

Direct Link’s exclusive line of medical alert systems are monitored 24/7 by a CSAA 5-Diamond Certified Care Center, enabling seniors to live independently at home for as long as safely possible. The Direct Link product suite includes land-line and cellular personal emergency response systems (PERS), automated medication dispensers, GPS client tracking, Care Watch and remote vital signs monitoring systems. If a unit is activated or a reading is abnormal, the device alerts Home Helpers staff, 911 or any pre-established contacts, thereby easing family anxieties and maximizing client independence.

“My sister and I were born and raised in St. Paul, and are proud to be working with such a tight knit community,” Olesen said. “Our goal is to treat every family with ‘Minnesota kindness’ as we provide affordable and convenient choices based on client specific requirements.”
