Parks Event Preview: Mini and Small World Camps

From science to getting soaked, Oakdale's Parks and Recreation Department has eight weeks of summer fun lined up for kids ages 3 to 11.

Oakdale's Parks and Recreation Department has eight weeks of camps centered around art, food or playing in the water planned for kids ages 3 to 11.

Each camp lasts Monday through Thursday. Older kids—ages 6 to 11—have camps from 1:30 to 4 p.m., and younger kids—ages 3 to 5—meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Following are descriptions of the camps from the Oakdale Update newsletter:

Mini Camps (ages 6 to 11, $25/week)

Note: First dates shown take place at the Oakdale Nature Preserve, and the second dates shown take place at Richard Walton Park.

  • Artful Antics (June 20-23/July 25-28): This is your opportunity to get those creative juices flowing! Experience different types of art using a variety of common and some not so common materials in a fun learning atmosphere.
  • Dash Through the Decades (Aug. 8-11/June 13-16): Join us as we head back to the 50s and rattle and roll our way to the 90s. Each day we’ll be rockin’ and rollin’ through a different decade. We’ll see you in the past, present, or the future as we travel through time!
  • Incredible Edibles (July 18-21/July 11-14): Join us for a week of edible creations! We’ll make graham cracker mosaics, food finger paint, edible fire, and design chef hats!
  • Mad Mixtures (July 25-28/June 27-30): Get ready for a mad week of science! Create a variety of icky, sticky, silly stuff. Come dressed for some mad mixing fun!
  • Super Soakin’ Week 1 (July 11-14/July 18-21):Wear your swimsuits and be prepared for a week of water fun! Water bucket brigade, slip-n-slides, Drip Drip Drop, and water balloons are just a taste of what to expect during this wild week of water fun!
  • Super Soakin’ Week 2 (Aug. 1-4/Aug. 8-11): Due to popularity, a second week of water fun has been added to the Mini Camp line-up! Cool off and stay refreshed on the hottest days of summer!
  • Super Sports Showdown (June 27-30/June 20-23): Come spend the week playing sports of all sorts and games galore! We’ll focus on having fun, developing sportsmanship, and learning to be a team player. The week will end with an awards ceremony.
  • Where the Wild Things Are (June 13-16/Aug. 1-4): Join us in the forest with wild creatures all around. We’ll uncover critters, investigate insects, and go on creek tours and forest expeditions. Anything can happen where the wild things are.

Small World Camps (ages 3 to 5, $15/week)

  • A Bug’s Life (June 13-16/Oakdale Nature Preserve): It’s all bugs this week! We’ll use our nets to find flying insects and hunt for creepy crawlies under logs. We’ll make fun bug crafts and play insect games. We might even eat a bug snack!
  • Knights and Princess Camp (June 20-23/Eberle Park): Join us for a royal week of magical fun. The knights will go on a quest to find Merlin; we’ll play “King or Queen Says”, have a jester contest and on the final day we’ll have a masquerade ball! Come dressed as your favorite knight or princess.
  • Kidasaurus Rex (June 27-30/Oakfield Park): Calling all Oakdale paleontologists! Investigate all you’ve ever wondered about prehistoric creatures. Prepare for a r-r-roaring good time.
  • Fizz! Bang! Pop! (July 11-14/Walton Park): Join us for a week of crazy concoctions. We’ll make science explode through exciting sounds and smells. Great ready for a “fizzing” good time!
  • Mini Monets (July 18-21/Oakdale Nature Preserve): Discover the artist in you! Let your imaginations run wild. We will also sing songs and play games. Dress to get messy!
  • Splishin’ and Splashin’ (July 25-28/Richard Walton Park): Splishin’ and splashin’ all while laughin’! Beat the heat using water balloons, sprinklers, slip-n-slides and everything water related. Hurry, this one fills fast!
  • Spurs, Boots & Saddles (Aug. 1-4/Eberle Park): Howdy y’all! See the west as it used to be. Saddle up and get ready for a boot stomping good time. Yee Haw!
  • Gamesapalooza (Aug. 8-11/Oakfield Park): Join us for an active week of exciting games and activities that will focus on having fun and the development of sportsmanship.
