Parks Event Preview: Oakdale’s Outdoor Speaker Series

A series of family-friendly outdoor talks on plants, animals and more will take place at the Discovery Center amphitheater throughout the summer.

Learn about plants, animals and even some history at the Oakdale Parks and Recreation Department’s family-friendly outdoor speaker series.

The next session is a talk on birding at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7. Speaker series events are held at the amphitheater, or inside in the case of rain.

Here’s the full schedule for the summer, from the Oakdale Parks and Recreation Department’s summer guide:

  •  June 7: “Outdoor Birding” 6:30-7:30 p.m. Oakdale resident and Naturalist Jill Sadler will teach the basics and key components of birding.
  • June 18: Como Zoo Presents: “Fur, Feathers, Scales and Slime” 1-2 p.m. Meet live animals and also try to run like a rabbit, slither like a snake, soar like an eagle, eat like a frog, and more!
  • July 9: Guthrie Theater Presents: “Guthrie History and Behind the Scenes” 1-2 p.m.
  • July 23: Como Zoo Presents: “Plants that Care” 1-2 p.m. Do you know which plants can help you when you are sick, stressed, or injured? Learn about them and make a Pampering Plant Product to take home!
  • Aug. 20: Como Zoo Presents: “Let’s Get Buggy” 1-2 p.m. Get an up close view into the world of bugs and learn about the many ways they help us.
  • Aug. 23: Geocaching” 6:30-7:30 p.m. Learn everything you need to know! The basics, where caches are hidden, tracking them, and more!
  • Aug. 25: “Beekeeping and Honey Extraction” 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Oakdale Resident AJ Moses shares his experiences as a beekeeper and also enjoy honey fresh off the honeycomb!
