Patch Picks: Cinco de Mayo Celebrations
Go south of the border in spirit for a day, right here in the Oakdale area.
On May 5, 1862, while the USA was embroiled in the Civil War, the Mexican state of Puebla defeated their French invaders. Almost 150 years later, the day is one where everyone is un poco Latino. Here are a few area spots to check out if you want to get in on the Cinco de Mayo festivities:
Acapulco Restaurante Mexicano
Why celebrate for just one day when you can have the whole week? Acapulco is offering a full week of Cinco de Mayo-infused celebrations, with deals on food and drinks alike. Go ahead and meet up with your old friend José Cuervo at their area locations in Maplewood, Stillwater or Woodbury. Check their website for a full list of locations.
Afton*Hudson Cruise Lines: Cinco de Mayo Beer Tasting & Dinner Cruise
It’s not international waters, but (nearly) anything goes out on the St. Croix River on this party boat. In addition to beer, this cruise also offers mojitos and margaritas to complement a Mexican dinner buffet and the sultry sounds of salsa band Latin Fusion. The boat sails May 6 from 6:30-9:00 p.m.

St. Paul’s Cinco de Mayo Fiesta—Minnesota’s Spiciest Celebration!
One of the largest Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the country, the Riverview Economic Development Association (REDA) expects over 100,000 people to fill the District del Sol from May 5-7. Some of the activities include:
- Lowrider car show: May 6, 4-9 p.m.
- Sound Off & Hop Showcase: May 6, 6:30 p.m.
- Parade: May 7, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
Zantigo: Free Chilito Day
Zantigo, which has a Woodbury location, is continuing its annual “Show Us Your ‘Stache” contest by awarding one free chilito to customers—as long as you have the requisite facial hair. Lack the Y chromosome? Zantigo will also honor painted-on ‘staches, or print one out from their website.
