Do You Know the Side Effects of Chiropractic?

Do You Know the Side Effects of Chiropractic

Everyone knows the side effects of taking drugs.  In fact, many of the side effects are worse than the conditions that the drugs are designed to treat.  Like drugs, chiropractic also has an entire list of side effects.  We often hear from our practice members, during the strengthening and stabilizing phase of their care, that they are experiencing things like:  More energy, better sleep, fewer aches and pains, a greater resistance to colds and flu, improved digestion and elimination, that they are more productive at work and that they are more loving in their relationships.

Much like drugs, chiropractic has very powerful effects on physiology.  However, unlike drugs, chiropractic doesn't artificially force the change with chemicals.  Rather it promotes the change by enhancing the inborn healing and regulating powers of the body, by releasing stored tension within the nervous system - the body's master control system.

The common misconception about chiropractic is that it is for the treatment of back and neck pain.  Relief from neck and back pain are actually side effects of chiropractic.  The reason that chiropractors "treat" the back is because our back bone surrounds and protects the spinal cord - the part of the central nervous system that carries information between our brain and body.

How chiropractic works is quite simple:

1. Our bodies are self-healing and self-regulating; this is a self evident truth.

2. The nervous system is the most complicated and highly organized of the various systems which make up the human body. It is the mechanism concerned with the correlation and integration of various bodily processes and the reactions and adjustments of the organism to its environment. In addition the cerebral cortex is concerned with conscious life.  - Henry Gray.  Anatomy of the Human Body.  1918.

Simply put, we live our lives through our nervous system.  The nervous system controls and coordinates every cell, tissue, muscle and organ, plus adapts and regulates your body to the environment.

If 1 and 2 are true, then when the communication between the brain and body is disturbed, the healing and regulating functions of your body are also disturbed and your body can be affected in many unhealthy ways.

Chiropractic is concerned with the detection and correction of disturbances within the nervous system.  If the disturbances in communication between the brain and body are corrected, the natural result will be improved healing and improved body function.  The improvements tend to manifest in the form of the "side effects" or side benefits mentioned above.
