Bilingual Mass at Guardian Angels on May 20

Guardian Angels offers a Mass in Spanish and English in solidarity with its Sister Parish in Teustepe Nicaragua, Sunday, May 20, 9 am.

Guardian Angels Catholic Church of Oakdale MN has had a sister parish in Teustepe, Boaco Nicaragua for more than 25 years. It is one of the oldest such relationships of a Catholic Church in our Archdiocese.

Teustepe is a rural community with a central town of about 3,750 people and more than 60 surrounding rural villages with a combined population of more than 25,000.

It is located about 2 hours northeast of Managua, the national capitol of Nicaragua, with the Department of Boaco (an administrative unit of the National Government), in a cattle-ranching, drought-prone area of Nicaragua.

Our Sister Parish is Santa Rita, named after an Italian saint who served the poor. Like Guardian Angels, who has a Sister Parish Ministry to maintain the relationship, Santa Rita has a less formally associated parish group called the "Community of Santa Rita." The Chair of their group is Sebastian Gonzalez who recently was elected to that position. John Twohey and John Babcock, co-chair Guardian Angels' sister parish ministry.

As is typical in Latin America, the community of Teustepe celebrates the patron of their Church, Santa Rita, whose feast day is May 22nd, pretty much the old month. Guardian Angels in solidarity with Santa Rita, will offer a bilingual (Spanish and English) ass on May 20 at 9 am with Fr. Kevin Kenney, Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, offering the bilingual Mass. There will be a procession at this Masses and all the Masses that weekend to honor Santa Rita as well as the 25 year plus sister parish relationship with Santa Rita's.

All are welcome at Guardian Angels, but we would like to give a special invitation to those that speak or understand Spanish to attend 9 am Mass on Sunday, May 20th. For more information contact Marla Simmet at 459-9448.

Bob Walz recently had full knee replacement surgery and will be out for at least 6 weeks. He will be asking other members of the parish Peace and Justice Action Ministry to fill in for him. Among the future articles will be "Hope for the Journey Home," an initiative of east metro churches to provide shelter and supportive services to homeless families, a more detailed look at Catholic social teachings, and a few insights on hot button issues from our Peace and Justice Action Ministry's perspective.
