Bites Nearby: An Energizing New Restaurant Opens in Afton

Dave and Dan Jarvis, brothers and owners of the newly opened Current, have completely gutted and transformed the former digs of Catfish Saloon into an electric, lively and energetic dining spot.

Current, the brainchild of brothers Dave and Dan Jarvis of the Afton House Inn family, officially opened on April 1, with a grand-opening scheduled for Saturday, April 30, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“Our guests and neighbors have been asking us for years to open up something like this, and with the economic indicators finally taking an upturn, it was time,” Dave Jarvis said.

As far as the restaurantʼs name, he said they solicited many people for possible ideas and someone mentioned the name, Current.

“We wanted a name that kept pace with life, an energetic name of sorts, and yet still had a connection with the St. Croix River, since weʼre located right next to it. The name Current fit the bill perfectly,” he said.

You could say the food entrees and moderate pricing are keeping “current” with todayʼs health oriented and money savvy consumers. Chef Marc Paavola, and his culinary team, take great pride in providing organic foods that are made from scratch.

Paavola said they incorporate only the highest quality and freshest ingredients into their foods, and most all of their ingredients come from locally owned farms and businesses.

Another unique thing Current is doing to keep up with the health concerns of their patrons, is offering gluten-free dishes on their menu. Approximately half of the menu items are gluten-free and are marked with a “C” icon for easy identification.

Take, for instance, the gluten-free, Grass Fed Sliced New York Strip ($23). You can taste the difference in a grass fed cut of meat as itʼs really tender and succulent. The steak is served with a flavorful Argentinian style, red pepper Chim Churri sauce, garden fresh fingerling potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

Budget savvy patrons will want to hit Current for lunch Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to enjoy the $6 lunch. This lunch includes your choice of a half a freshly prepared sandwich (choose from Hot Muffuletta, Monte Cristo, Turkey Bruschetta or Best Vegetarian Sandwich Ever) and fresh-cut French fries or hot cup of homemade soup.

If you feel like indulging a little on the calorie front, choose Currentʼs Monte Cristo sandwich for your sandwich choice, as itʼs is one of the best! This rich and decadent sandwich consists of smoked slices of ham and cave-aged gruyere cheese that are sandwiched between two, thick white slices of Pullman bread, grilled to a golden brown goodness and then dusted with white powdered sugar. According to Chef Paavola, this cave-aged gruyere cheese is one of the best cheeses you can buy this side of Europe.

Flatbread lovers must try the sweet and spicy Grilled Thai Chicken ($9). It consists of scallions, shredded mozzarella, grilled Thai chicken, Thai peanut sauce drizzled with a naturally sweet, carrot vinaigrette. Pair this spicy flatbread with a sweet Key Lime Pie Martini ($8)—another perfect pairing!

Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Guests will enjoy the special pricing on the late night menu, $5 martinis, Mojitos and Current cocktails, $2 off wines by the glass and $1 off tap beer.

During boating season, Current will deliver right to the marinas, but Jarvis suggests calling ahead to place marina orders. For more information call: 651-436-8883.
Current is located at 3291 St. Croix Trail S. in Afton.
