Editor's Notebook: Strip Mall Owner Seeks Operator for New Cafe

The owner of a strip mall just south of 15th Street on Helmo Avenue is seeking an operator for his café and ice cream shop, which will soon be ready for business.

Owner Doug Coombs—who said he has a history of flipping businesses—is in the process of getting the city approvals needed to open the Helmo Avenue Coffee & Waffle at 1417 Helmo Ave. next to . He said the shop could open in anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on whether he finds an operator for the shop, or ends up running it himself at first, he said.

He plans to offer Bridgeman’s Ice Cream at the shop, he said. In the same building, Coombs also has a bakery space with equipment available for rent, he said, in the location vacated by Mattison Specialty Breads.
