New Caribou Will Move into Old Blockbuster Site Soon

Caribou Coffee is preparing to open its second coffee shop in Oakdale.

Remodeling is underway at the old Blockbuster site at Bergen Plaza off of 10th Street. Caribou plans to open its second location there by the end of October, according to a company spokesperson.

The city's only is currently located off of Third Street next to and across from . 

Caribou did not need city approval for its second location. Instead the company just needed a building permit to make improvements to the structure, said City Planner Whitney Ridlon.

"When development occurs we require a site plan review," Ridlon said. "They're just retrofitting; they're not making significant changes."

The new Caribou will have a drive-thru window. The Caribou will also follow the company's new brand approach by designing each indiviual Caribou to fit into its designated community. The company began this new approach when it opened additional stores last year, the spokesperson said. 

A will also be constructed in Oakdale since the city approved the site plan and variance in June. This Caribou will be located at the intersection of Highway 36 and Century Avenue where a Kwik Stop Gas Station used to be.

Caribou needed city approval since the site required so much work since it used to be a former gas station. The site's redevelopment will most likely begin in the spring.

The Bergen Plaza Caribou will have a grand opening as well as incentives to win free coffee for the remainder of the year.
