Five Things You Should Know Today: Aug. 19

Tartan dance team fundraiser as well as presentations on bugs and owls this weekend.

  1. There’s a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service forecast, but otherwise it will be partly sunny with a high near 81.
  2. dance team is holding a fundraising car wash from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Holiday Gas Station at 757 Radio Drive in Woodbury.
  3. Sen. Al Franken made a stop Thursday just down the road in Stillwater to speak to a group of Rotarians. See Stillwater Patch for more coverage of his visit.
  4. Oakdale’s Outdoor Speaker Series continues this weekend with a session on presented by the Como Zoo. The event is at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the amphitheater. If you prefer owls to bugs, check out the “Screech Owls” campfire program at Lake Elmo Park Reserve at 7:15 p.m. instead.
  5. An event for kids and families that benefits the families of police officers killed in the line of duty takes place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Woodbury’s .
