Five Things You Should Know Today: Aug. 22

Buckthorn busting volunteers are needed. Oakdale's parks department is seeking a group to run the Tanner's Lake Park concessions stand next year.

  1. It should be nice once again today—sunny with a high near 82, according to the National Weather Service forecast.
  2. Oakdale’s Parks and Recreation department is looking for sponsors for next year’s Fourth of July event and community groups that are interested in running the concessions stand at as a fundraiser next summer.
  3. Volunteers are needed to help wage war on buckthorn Saturday, Oct. 15. To volunteer call (651) 501-5302.
  4. Today is “Be an Angel Day,” a day to practice simple acts of kindness.
  5. Author Ray Bradbury, best known for the novel Fahrenheit 451, turns 91 today. Here are some of Bradbury’s words of wisdom: ”Don't think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It's self-conscious, and anything self-conscious is lousy. You can't try to do things. You simply must do things.”
