Five Things You Should Know Today: August 2

Tonight is Night to Unite ... and it's National Psychic Week.

  1. There’s a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service forecast, but otherwise it should be partly sunny with a high near 88.
  2. This evening is Night to Unite and National Night Out—the night with the theme of crime prevention when neighbors get out of the house and meet each other at block parties. The Oakdale Police Department had been notified of 15 parties going on in the city, but there are sure to be more.
  3. If you dine at Denny’s on Century Avenue just north of Interstate 94 between 4 and 10 p.m. today, you’ll be helping to raise money for the .  The restaurant is donating 10 percent of sales made between 4 and 10 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays in August to the cause.
  4. I only mention national news here if it’s really big, but I thought this one qualified: Yesterday, the day before the deadline set by President Barack Obama to raise the national debt ceiling, the U.S. House of representatives passed a bill to do just that. The U.S. Senate is scheduled to vote on the measure today.
  5. Maybe you already knew this, but this week is National Psychic Week. Awhile back we profiled Oakdale’s own psychic Joan Jacqueline.
