Five Things You Should Know Today: July 1

The Minnesota government shut down this morning.

  1. It’s going to be another hot day. An excessive heat warning is still in effect, and the heat index could get as high as 105, according to the National Weather Service forecast. It will be mostly sunny and hot with a high near 96.
  2. The Minnesota state government shut down at 12:01 a.m. this morning. Today we have the story of one Oakdale woman who didn’t know whether she’d be laid off until Thursday morning.  We want to tell the stories of Oakdale residents affected by the shutdown. If you have a story to tell, please e-mail Patty Busse at patty.busse@patch.com.
  3. If there’s one good thing about the heat, it makes it a perfect day for kids to play outside in the water—and it just so happens the Oakdale Parks and Recreation Department will be setting up a big water slide for kids on the hill at Tower Park and 1 p.m.
  4. Don’t go to Tanner’s Lake Park on the Fourth! Oakdale’s Fourth of July celebration has moved to .
  5. Just in case you were wondering—Lake Elmo Park Reserve is not affected by the state government shutdown, however they are booked up for camping this weekend.
