Five Things You Should Know Today: June 17

Chance of storms ... and don't forget Father's Day!

  1. It will be partly sunny with a high of 78 today, according to the National Weather Service forecast, however there’s a 40 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms after 1 p.m.
  2. There was a major fire at a Tubman family violence shelter in Lake Elmo late yesterday afternoon, leaving the shelter uninhabitable. A Tubman board member said the need to retrofit the organization’s new site, purchased from the monastery at Larpenteur and Century avenues, is now more urgent.
  3. Father’s Day is Sunday! If you’re looking for something to do (or just an excuse to eat pancakes) you might want to check out the Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast at the Lake Elmo Airport. See our list for other Father's Day ideas.
  4. I (editor Patty Busse) just returned from a conference for journalists on retirement issues in Washington D.C. Look for stories on this subject on Oakdale Patch in the coming months, and if there's something you would like to see, please let me know.
  5. Are you a state worker, or someone who would be otherwise affected by a Minnesota state government shutdown? Please email me at patty.busse@patch.com. We’re making preparations to report on this event, if it happens, and we'd like to get as many perspectives as we can.
We’ve removed the ability to reply as we work to make improvements. Learn more here
