Five Things You Should Know Today: June 29
Outdoor concert, Oakdale Farmers Market today
- It should be another nice day today—mostly sunny with a high near 86 according to the National Weather Service forecast.
- If you’re feeling like taking advantage of the nice weather, stop by the Oakdale Farmers Market in the Oakdale City Hall parking lot from 3 to 7 p.m. or watch Sherwin Linton play at Walton Park from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
- Gov. Mark Dayton said today is do or die day for averting a Minnesota state government shutdown. If legislators can’t reach an agreement today, there likely won’t be enough time to draft legislation and get it passed before the July 1 shutdown deadline, he said. We’ll be posting updates with the latest on the negotiations and potential impact of a shutdown daily, or more often, if needed.
- In honor of the Armstrong family, which has maintained their farm on the Oakdale/Lake Elmo border since 1853 (it was soon-to-become Oakdale Township back then), here’s a fun Oakdale history fact from the Washington County Historical Society: During the 1930s the main winter industry in Oakdale Township was cutting ice from Tanner's Lake for use during the summer in ice boxes.
- There may only be two days left, but it’s still worth mentioning that June is International Men’s Health Month. According to a fact sheet, women are 100 percent more likely to visit a doctor for annual exams and preventative services than men. Find more information at menshealthmonth.org.
