Five Things You Should Know Today: June 30

There's an excessive heat warning today.

  1. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for today, and the forecast says the heat index could get up to 107. “A hot and muggy air mass will move into the area by daybreak Thursday and continue through the day and into the night,” the warning says. The weather will be mostly sunny and hot with a high near 95, according to the forecast.
  2. Oakdale-based Coco’s Heart Dog Rescue is trying to raise $1,000 to treat a kitten with a curable fungal infection that has caused its eyes to be swollen shut. Click here for more information. If you don’t want to donate, better avoid looking at the picture. It’s too cute to resist. 
  3. A Minnesota state government shutdown appears more imminent as budget talks yesterday didn’t yield an agreement. Still, Rep. Matt Dean (R-Dellwood), said in a late-night press conference he thought a shutdown could be avoided.
  4. A new restaurant called will open in Woodbury’s CityWalk on July 4. The restaurant will include a sushi bar which the owner said will offer "a show in itself."
  5. On this date in 1953, the first Corvette rolled off the GM assembly line, according to History.com. Early sales were unimpressive, according to the website, however by 1961 it was America’s favorite sports car.
