Five Things You Should Know Today: September 6

It's the first day of school (and wild rice month)!

  1. Today’s weather should be sunny with a high near 75, according to the National Weather Service forecast.
  2. The first day of school is today in District 622 for grades one through 12. The back-to-school stories we’ve written include one on this year, the , the new principals at Eagle Point and schools and a new teacher at Oakdale Elementary School who left a job in engineering.
  3. Veterans who are looking for work are invited to show up at the Washington County Workforce Center in Woodbury today from 9 a.m. to noon for networking.
  4. Auditions for Woodbury Community Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol will take place this evening, as well as Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the new Merrill Community Arts Center.
  5. September is wild rice month. According to the Whole Grains Council, wild rice is the state grain of Minnesota, and by law the state’s wild rice must be harvested in the traditional American Indian way—using beater sticks to knock the rice into the canoes.
