Snowmobile Safety Week, Service Delivers Groceries to Homebound Seniors

Five things you should know today, Monday, Jan. 16

1. Today’s weather will be mostly cloudy with a high near 24, according to the National Weather Service.

2. Oakdale schools, government offices and a couple of banks are closed today due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Click here for the full listing of MLK Day closures.

3. There’s an informational meeting tomorrow from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. on Store to Door, a nonprofit organization that shops for and delivers groceries to elderly people who are homebound. The meeting takes place at the Woodbury YMCA. To register call 651-642-1892 or email maryjo@storetodoor.org.

4. International snowmobile safety week starts today, according to the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association. The association offers six key tips for avoiding the hazards that cause most snowmobiling accidents, which include checking local ice conditions and not mixing snowmobiling and alcohol. It’s a good reminder after this weekend’s tragedy in Wright County in which two bodies were recovered from Lake Charlotte after what appears to have been a snowmobiling accident.

5. Martin Luther King Jr. Day offers a chance to reflect and be inspired. The civil rights leader is quoted on BrainyQuote.com as saying, “An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”
