State Fair Day 2: Breakfast Spam, Fire Safety and Def Leppard
Here are our picks for today's Minnesota State Fair essentials.
To know: The rides at Mighty Midway and Kidway have a one-ticket discount until 1 p.m. The weather is expected to be sunny with a high of 86, about 50 percent humidity and a 20 percent chance of rain. Check out the fair’s website for a full schedule of the day’s activities and events.
To extinguish: Flames. It’s Governor’s Fire Prevention Day at the fair, and Carousel Park will have presentations by the Regions Hospital Burn Center and the American Red Cross from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The “Hot Zone” at West Dan Patch will host fire trucks, a virtual fire extinguisher simulator and a search-and-rescue trailer. In the Fire Explorer Challenge (also at Carousel Park), 23 groups from around the state—including one from Oakdale—will compete in five firefighter-related events.
To taste: Spam. Winners of the Spam contest show off their prize-winning recipes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Education Building. This year’s contest focused on breakfast and brunch food.
To bark: Doggies of the Wild West. The western-themed variety show features eight stunt pooches performing daily throughout the fair at 12 p.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Located east of Heritage Square and north of the Skyride.
To hear: Def Leppard. The British pop metal holdover from the ‘80s is playing at the grandstand at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for $41, $51 and $61, but seating is limited.
