Community Corner

Week in Review: Feb. 13 Edition

A pawnshop moratorium was passed last Tuesday.

Here is a brief summary of what made news in Oakdale this past week:

  • An Oakdale man was charged with two counts of domestic assault and one count of interfering with a 911 call for allegedly beating a woman in his home.
  • The Oakdale City Council voted 3-2 Tuesday to enact a one-year moratorium  on new pawnshops in town, which will slow down a proposed new pawnshop at the northeast corner of Highway 36 and Highway 120.
  • Two Washington County commissioners said they want to stop charging a .25 percent sales tax to fund transit projects and pull out of the Counties Transit Improvement Board at a workshop meeting Tuesday. The majority of Washington County Board members say they prefer to stay on the transit board.
  • Construction on a new McDonald’s restaurant near Target and M&I Bank should begin soon, Community Development Director Bob Streetar told an inquisitive Webelos Scout at Tuesday’s Oakdale City Council meeting.
  • The City of Oakdale is going to do what it can to force 29 Pines Manufactured Home Park to provide an emergency shelter to its residents.
  • Oakdale Patch’s first Whiz Kid of the week was Thomas Bao, a Skyview Middle School eighth-grader who won the school’s geography bee, and now has the chance to qualify for state and national competition. We also named our first Exceptional Educator, Tartan’s Craig Spreiter. Have a Whiz Kid or Exceptional Educator nomination? E-mail them to patty.busse@patch.com.
  • In Sports: Hill-Murray beat Tartan’s No. 3-ranked boys basketball team. Tartan boys JV swimmers fared well at a meet Thursday.
