Week in Review: July 31 Edition
A pedestrian was hit by a car and killed while crossing Highway 36 at Century Avenue this past week.
Here’s a summary of what made news in Oakdale this past week:
- Washington County residents can sign up now to get email and cell phone notification if there’s an emergency in their neighborhood.
- The developer of a new hotel proposed at Oak Marsh Golf Course responded to concerns that the area can’t support another hotel.
- Oakdale City Council members said at their workshop meeting Tuesday that they are unsure whether they are willing to help fund lighting at the Tanners Lake Park ball field and the Oakdale Veterans’ Memorial after learning that the cost to the city would be higher than originally thought.
- Oakdale’s fire chief said he was surprised to learn that funding for a new fire training facility close to the Oakdale/Maplewood border was included in the bonding bill passed by the Minnesota Legislature.
- The Washington County Board approved a plan to construct a new ski trailhead at Lake Elmo Park Reserve.
- Washington County Board member Lisa Weik expressed concern that Commissioner Bill Pulkrabek would not give a report on the conference he attended recently in Portland, OR, at Tuesday’s board meeting. Pulkrabek said he was waiting for Dennis Hegberg—who also went on the trip—to be present for his report.
- The City of Oakdale plans to seek out community groups that might want to operate a concessions stand at Tanners Lake Park, which could result in being able to re-open the bathroom building for park users, after a decision from the Oakdale City Council Tuesday. The council also decided to demolish the former nature center building, which was hit by a downed tree.
- A pedestrian was killed crossing Highway 36 at Century Avenue Thursday night. Family and friends said they tried to warn Alicia M. Galdick , 23, of North St. Paul that a car was coming as she walked into the road, but she realized what was happening too late.
- Washington County’s parks department is working on plans to increase the access to the west side of Lake Elmo Park Reserve by adding trails.
- Oakdale has opted out of a lawsuit filed by Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson against 3M Co. for damages caused by pollution in the east metro area, the Star Tribune reported. Lake Elmo has chosen to participate in the lawsuit, the report says.
- The Washington County Fair starts this Wednesday. The Pioneer Press reports on how donors helped keep the event alive.
