Census data released last week shows a changing racial makeup of Oakdale citizens.
Here is a brief summary of what made news in Oakdale this past week:
- The Oakdale Discovery Center has been hatching live butterflies for an educational exhibit.
- A bill co-sponsored by Sen. Chuck Wiger would require that high school students be tested for career and college readiness.
- A five-year-old Oakdale-based nonprofit organization helps meet the needs of kids and families affected by child maltreatment by connecting those who want to help with social workers.
- Oakdale’s Parks and Recreation Department is considering purchasing oversized chess and checkers sets and paying for additional concerts with money saved from cutting lifeguards at .
- The Westboro Baptist Church has threatened to protest Tartan High School’s spring play, The Laramie Project.
- Oakdale Parks and Recreation Director Bruce Anderson will be retiring in July, and the city is working now to find his replacement.
- Newly released census data shows Oakdale’s population grew slightly between 2000 and 2010, but the racial makeup changed a lot. The number of white people living in Oakdale was more than 2,000 less in 2010 than it was in 2000.
- A Lake Elmo lighting law creates another hurdle the Oakdale Athletic Association and City of Oakdale must clear to construct lighted ball fields on the east side of Skyview Elementary School.
- In Sports: The Tartan boys basketball team defeated Stillwater Tuesday to advance to the section finals, but then lost a close game against Cretin-Derham Hall Friday.
