Week in Review: March 25 Edition
Here's a quick summary of the past week's Oakdale news.
- The Oakdale Parks and Recreation Commission plans to explore the possibility of establishing a dog park in the city.
- A student made international news for finding an adult film actress to attend prom with him through Twitter, and subsequently being told school officials wouldn’t allow him to bring her to the dance. The decision incited a steady stream of comments, most in support of the student, on Twitter.
- The Oakdale Police Department issued a crime alert Thursday after a string of burglaries scattered between Ninth Street and 48th Street.
- A stray bullet hit an Oakdale girl in the leg on her way into an Afton church.
- Woodbury marketing consultant Susan Kent announced her intention to seek the DFL endorsement to run for the District 53 Minnesota Senate seat. The district encompasses the portion of Oakdale south of 10th Street. Sen. Ted Lillie (R-Lake Elmo) has announced he will move to Woodbury and run for the seat.
- Oakdale’s Arnie Curiel was recognized as one of KARE 11’s Eleven Who Care for 2012. He coordinates the Shop with Cops program in the Frogtown and Summit-University neighborhoods, a program he helped start.
- A new Associated Bank branch is opening in the building vacated by M&I Bank near McDonald’s.
- Funding for the Oakdale Veterans Memorial was not included in the Minnesota House bonding proposal. The project was included in Gov. Mark Dayton’s proposal, and the Minnesota Senate hasn’t released its proposal yet.
- An Oakdale man was convicted of mail theft and bank fraud.
- Rep. Nora Slawik (DFL-Maplewood) is working with a group of northern Minnesota landowners who want state law changed so that mining companies can’t damage or take their land through eminent domain.
- In police news: A car was stripped of its tires, rotors and gas while parked in a driveway.
