Week in Review: March 6 Edition

The owner of a former par-3 golf course wants the land rezoned to make it easier to sell, area residents said they are opposed.

Here is a brief summary of what made news in Oakdale this past week:

  • A new program at called Advancement Via Individual Determination targets students who are middle-of-the-road academically and prepares them for college and rigorous high school course work. 
  • A St. Paul man was charged with allegedly storming into Community Welfare Services in Oakdale, where the man had been fired the day prior, and pushing and threatening his former manager. 
  • Elementary school students in District 622’s SAIL (Students Accelerated in Learning) program displayed their research projects at a research fair at Tuesday night. 
  • High-ticket items including a $2,500 ring and an $1,800 purse were reported stolen from vehicles in Oakdale in two separate incidents. 
  • Marcus Theatres was fined for violating child labor laws following an investigation that included the . 
  • teachers Daniel and Sheryl Krengel were granted a two-year leave of absence to teach in Beijing in a compromise decision after they were denied their original request to take a five-year leave. 
  • Residents who live along a former par-3 golf course spoke against rezoning the property for high-density residential at Thursday’s Oakdale Planning Commission meeting. The site’s landowner said he wants the rezoning to make the property easier to sell
  • In sports: Tartan wrestlers T.J. O’Hara and Alex Johnson were eliminated from competition in the first day of the Class AAA state tournament.
