2. On this day in 1942, the Battle of Midway began. The sea and air fight between the U.S. and Japan became known as one of the most decisive American victories in World War II.

4. Happy Birthday, Angelina Jolie. The actress, 36, is known for her humanitarian efforts. In 2005, Jolie accepted a Global Humanitarian Award for her efforts as goodwill ambassador to the UN Refugee Agency.
