Detach from Yahweh's Creation

A degree of worldly detachment is required to experience the spark of God that resides in each of us.  That spark of inner knowledge (gnosis) is waiting to be brought into our consciousness.  Someone who is too focused on the physical world cannot give sufficient attention to discovering that spark of God's Light - the Light that gives our lives here on earth true meaning.

Gnostics say that the physical world was created not by God, but by a lessor being.  In Greek that lesser god was called the demiurge.  For Gnostic Christians, the demiurge is understood to be the god of the Old Testament – the god I call the creator or Yahweh.  Mythically speaking, Yahweh doesn’t want us to achieve gnosis because then we’ll see that he isn’t the one true God and he will lose his power over us.

I heard this story about a college freshman from a small town who joined the college softball team.  After the first few days of practice, she said, “I thought I was good, but I suck.”  She was the best player on her high school team.  However, once exposed to the bigger picture, she realized her achievements with her old team had become virtually irrelevant.  This is the same realization that occurs when a person detaches from Yahweh’s world and experiences the Light of God.

Gnostic Christians believe that Jesus was the ultimate Gnostic.  God's Spirit emanated so completely through Him that he was transformed into the living physical embodiment of God here on earth.  Jesus’s mission was to help us see past Yahweh so that we too could experience God.

In the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus says, "Whoever has come to know the world has discovered a carcass, and whoever has discovered a carcass, of that person the world is not worthy."  In other words, once you know Yahweh’s world as the place where your body lives, you’ll see that it isn’t the source of our true lives as spiritual beings.  You’ll see bodies, including your own, going about the business of life here on earth.  It will be like looking down at an ant hill and seeing your tiny body among the ants talking about what’s for supper.

Once you realize the temporary existence of yourself on this small little stage, you can start to become illuminated about your true place within the ultimate stage.  You’ll be open to experiencing the spark of God and rising above and beyond this world.  Jesus says in the Gospel of Thomas, “Be passersby”.   If you’re interested in gnosis, that’s the best way to start your journey.
