Vang's sister-in-law first called the Oakdale Police Department on May 4 accusing Vang of making four to five threatening phone calls that day. During the phone calls, the woman said that Vang threatened to kill the woman and her family for interfering in his personal business. The woman told officers that her sister, who is married to Vang, got into an argument with Vang and had left him.

The woman told officers that Vang threatened to come by her apartment and said he had three guns. She added that Vang had punched the woman in the past.

Officers then interviewed Vang's wife on May 5. The wife confirmed that she had fought with Vang and left to go stay at her mother's house the past two days.

The wife told officers, according to the complaint, that Vang called her and texted her repeatedly and threatened to kill her and their daughter.

The wife showed police officers voicemails that Vang had left. In the voicemails, Vang says he will kill and choke is wife and "kill everybody, including my own daughter." Vang also said in a voicemail that he would break his wife's back, according to the criminal complaint.

Both women told officers they feared for their lives and believed Vang's threats. His wife also requested an order of protection or restraining order.

In interviews with police officers Vang confirmed that he and his wife had been having problems and that "other people need to stay out of their business." Vang said he was upset with his sister-in-law but denied threatening anyone.

Vang admitted to police that he did leave his sister-in-law a voicemail saying he would punch her in the face if she didn't stay out of his business, but he denied leaving the message in a threatening manner.

Vang was found guilty of making terroristic threats in court. He was sentenced to spend five years on probation under certain conditions, including serving 70 days in Washington County Jail with 13 days credited, having no contact with the victim, completing a six-week domestic violence program, abstain from mood-altering substances, participating in a chemical dependency treatment, completing mental health programming and provide a "biological specimen" for DNA analysis.
