Driver Came Forward After 5-Year-Old Injured By Car

Police said the driver might not have known that he hit the boy near Pump It Up.

The driver of a car that hit a 5-year-old boy Nov. 15 outside Pump It Up has called police, according to media reports.

The driver "likely didn't know it happened and didn't act intentionally," Oakdale police Capt. Jack Kettler told the Pioneer Press.

Jakob Schafer, a kindergartner at Weaver Elementary in Maplewood, was outside the Oakdale business with his father when a car struck or ran over him, according to the police report. Weaver Elementary staff sent a letter to parents about the incident, the Pioneer Press reported.

KSTP reported the driver came forward after seeing that letter. The police department is not identifying the driver.

"We're not seeing any indication of malicious intent," Kettler told the Pioneer Press. "We're thinking it's probable that the driver may not have known they hit anybody. You know, children are very small ... it could be pretty tough to hear inside the vehicle."

The case is still under investigation.

Schafer has a broken femur and shattered pelvis, his mother, Shellie Rowe, told KSTP.
