Former Sheriff’s Deputy from Oakdale Convicted of Stealing Prescription Drugs

Ricky Harry Gruber, 43, was seen on surveillance video taking a drum used by the Washington County Sheriff's Office to collect unused prescription drugs.

Ricky Harry Gruber, 43, was seen on a hidden surveillance camera taking drugs from a secure drum used by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office to collect unused prescription drugs in February.

“The Washington County Sheriff’s office is to be congratulated for its swift and sure response in investigating the crimes committed by one of their own deputies,” Washington County Attorney Pete Orput said in a release. “Their professional response was responsible for our ability to bring him to justice. While it is disheartening when a law enforcement officer commits a crime, we can be reassured by the fact that they, too, will be brought to answer for their crime.”

Gruber on Feb. 6 was arrested and admitted he stole the key to the secure area and made a copy for his own use, according to the release. He was found guilty Monday, Nov. 4.

In an interview with police, Gruber said he took the drugs for personal use, and nearly 300 pills were found in his office and vehicle, according to the complaint.
