Driver Arrested in Rollover Crash on I-694 in Oakdale

Witnesses said the man tried to pass two cars by traveling at a high rate of speed between two lanes.

An Oakdale man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after allegedly causing a crash on southbound Interstate 694 south of 15th Street that rolled over his vehicle and sent two other cars off the road, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Eric L. Bielefeldt, 40, who faces pending charges of driving while intoxicated, hit the cars while trying to pass between them on the fog line at a high rate of speed, said Minnesota State Patrol Public Information Officer Lt. Eric Roeske.

Witnesses said he was going 100 mph, Roeske said.

The vehicle in the left lane spun out and the vehicle in the right lane spun out across the roadway, hit the cable barriers in the median, and then bounced back onto the roadway, Roeske said.

“Those cable barriers saved it from going into oncoming traffic,” Roeske said. “It was a very dangerous situation that he put those people in driving that fast.”

The other drivers were shaken up, but no one was seriously hurt in the crash, Roeske said.

When the Oakdale Fire Department got the call about the crash around 1 p.m., it sounded like they would have to perform an extrication to get the driver out of the rolled over vehicle, however, by the time they got on the scene, he had climbed out of the car, Oakdale Fire Chief Jeff Anderson said.

According to Minnesota court records, Bielefeldt was convicted of driving under the influence in 2007.
