Oakdale Police Blotter: Woman Files Taxes, Learns of Identity Theft

In other reports, a student fell and injured her back in a Skyview Community School locker room and a laptop computer was stolen from a car parked at Pinz.

After trying to file her taxes on Feb. 4, an Oakdale woman learned that her identity had been stolen, according to an Oakdale Police Department report.

The woman reported on Feb. 9 that her taxes were rejected because someone else filed taxes using her name, address, date of birth and Social Security number, the report says.

She said her PayPal account and Central Bank account were also recently compromised, according to the report.

The following incidents were also reported to Oakdale police Feb. 7-9:

  • A resident in the 4000 block of Geneva Avenue flagged down an officer around 9 a.m. and  reported that someone stole his car out of the parking lot where he lives. The vehicle’s value is about $3,500.
  • A complainant reported that two people were sleeping in a vehicle in the parking lot at the at about 9:27 a.m. The driver had a glass pipe on his lap, which police later learned contained marijuana residue. Both said they were traveling and admitted to having been sleeping for the past hour in their car. The driver was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia. 
  • Someone broke out the front, passenger side window of a vehicle parked at between 11:10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and stole a backpack containing a laptop, a day planner and an instructional CD with a total value of $1,120. The property damage estimate was $300.
  • Someone backed into a car in the parking lot at between 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. causing damage to the hood and grill of the car.
  • An Oakdale man got email messages regarding a possible work-at-home job. The company—called Computerworld—requested that the man send money through Western Union to get started, saying they would reimburse him. He did not send any money.
  • A 15-year-old boy reported that another 15-year-old boy purposely ran into him and said he wanted to fight at . The first boy then put the alleged instigator into a head lock, and when he released him the other boy punched him six times in the face. Police planned to locate witnesses to investigate the incident.

Feb. 8:

  • The Oakdale Fire Department transported a 15-year-old girl to Children’s Hospital after she admitted to taking 15 pills in an attempt to harm herself. She was upset over a breakup.
  • A 12-year-old girl was transported to Woodwinds Hospital after slipping and falling in a locker room at and injuring her back.

Feb. 9:

  • An Oakdale man reported receiving a phone call from US Bank regarding an address change request for his Visa account. His January statement had already been mailed to an address in Texas, however, there were no unauthorized transactions on his account. He was provided with an identity theft pamphlet and advised to check his credit history.
  • Police responded to the 4000 block of Gershwin Avenue after a cab driver reported that he dropped a woman off there who he’d picked up in Eden Prairie and she refused to pay the $120 fare. Police were unable to locate the woman.
  • A resident in the 4800 block of Helena Road reported that between 10 p.m. Feb. 8 and 6 a.m. the next day someone smashed his mailbox causing $40 damage.
  • A resident in the 3000 block of Hemingway Avenue reported the smell of gas. The Oakdale Fire Department responded and found a propane tank in the garage with the valve open.
