A Roseville man was arrested for allegedly striking an Oakdale man in the face and head with a log on New Year's Day.

Eric Michael Coppersmith, 35, of Roseville, was booked in Washington County Jail for first-degree assault pending a formal complaint.

According to the initial complaint:

An officer from the Oakdale Police Department found a 34-year-old Oakdale man lying in the snow and bleeding at the 3600 block of Garden Boulevard.

Police determined that Coppersmith allegedly struck the Oakdale man in the face and head with a log and then proceeded to kick and punch the man in the face and upper body, according to the report.

Police observed a severe eye injury and laceration on the back of the victim's head. The injured man was transported to Regions Hospital. Emergency personnel reported that the victim had a severed optical nerve to the right eye, according to a preliminary CT finding.
