Capitol Clips: Slawik Questions Republicans' Budget Bill Methodology

Rep. Nora Slawik questioned Republicans' methodology in assembling their draft of the Omnibus State Government Finance Bill in a committee meeting Tuesday.

The draft bill includes revenue figures that haven't yet been analyzed by House staff for their fiscal impact with the caveat that if the revenue doesn't come through, the Minnesota Management and Budget office will have to make cuts.

Slawik (DFL—District 55B), of Maplewood, said in the House State Government Finance Committee that it hadn't been done that way in the past.

Rep. Morrie Lanning (R—District 9A) of Moorhead, said because the Republicans are using new approaches, they are having trouble getting fiscal analyses for some of their proposals because the strategies are new to legislative staffers who provide the reports.
