Athletic Teams Must Pay New Fees to Play Tournaments in City Parks

The Oakdale City Council approved the Athletic Tournament Policy and Fees on Tuesday.

The Oakdale City Council approved Athletic Tournament Policy and Fees Tuesday night.

Parks Superintendent Randy Bastyr presented the new policy to the council. The policy covers all tournaments that are pay to play, meaning if a group charges a fee to play a sport then the city will recoup some of the costs of field maintenance.

All Oakdale youth athletic season end tournaments are exempt from the facility fees.

The fees will be effective for 2013 reservations. Tournament scheduling requests are due on Feb. 1, with scheduling priority going to the Oakdale Athletic Association, School District 622 and the Oakdale Adult Softball Association.

There are resident and non-resident fees. Groups must show proof that at least 75 percent of the team live in Oakdale to qualify for the resident rate.

Bastyr said the fees will only affect about six to eight tournaments a year.

"This is more consistent with other communities," said Councilman Stan Karwoski. "It only makes sense in these tough economic times."
