How to Register to Vote

In honor of National Voter Registration Day, we're giving you all the information you need on how and where to register to vote.

If you haven’t yet registered to vote, get it off your to-do list now.

Today is National Voter Registration Day, and thousands of local, state and national organizations have mobilized to make sure millions of people don’t miss the chance to cast their vote in this year’s elections.

Six million people didn’t vote in the 2008 elections because they either did not know how to register or because they missed the voter registration deadline.

The voter pre-registration deadline for Minnesota is Oct. 16, which means of you register to vote on or before the deadline it will save you time on Election Day and you will not need to bring anything with you to the polls.

Here’s information about registering to vote in time for the Nov. 6 elections:

Updating Your Registration
Your registration remains current until you move, change your name, or do not vote for four consecutive years. You may update your registration information by completing and submitting another Voter Registration Application.

Verify that you're registered
Use the Voter Registration Lookup to find out if you're already registered to vote at your current address.

Registering before Election Day
You may register to vote by completing a Voter Registration Application and submitting it by mail or in-person to the Washington County election official.  Find contact information for your county elections official by using the Election Official Directory.

  • Property Records and Taxpayer Services (PRTS) Office, in the Washington County Government Center, first floor;
  • Cottage Grove Service Center, public service counter, 13000 Ravine Parkway S., Cottage Grove;
  • Forest Lake Service Center, public service counter, 19955 Forest Road N., Forest Lake;
  • Woodbury Service Center, public service counter, 2150 Radio Drive, Woodbury.

Once registered, you will receive a postcard with information about where you vote (your polling place) and your name will appear on the list of voters at your polling place. It takes some time to put the list together, so if you haven't registered at least 21 days before the election, you can register at the polling place on Election Day.
