Parks Commission Giving Golfview Neighbors One More Chance to Speak on Proposed Community Garden

Commission members said they want to be sure neighbors of the park support the community garden proposal before moving forward.

No one who lives around showed up for the Parks and Recreation Commission’s meeting Tuesday, Jan. 17, nor has city staff received any letters, calls or email messages about the proposal to locate the city’s first community garden in the park, said Community Development Specialist Logan Martin.

But before formally approving the proposal, commission members want to make sure area residents aren’t opposed to it, they said, by sending them one more notification about the plan for a 30-by-100 foot space to be split into 16 plots for community members to use for gardens.

“Certainly, based on the strong negative response from the first location, I don’t want to proceed until we’re positive we’re not going to get that response,” said commission chair Rich Thielman.

Commission members said they want to give residents in the area the chance to show up at their Feb. 21 meeting to voice support or opposition for the proposal before voting to approve it.

Martin said Golfview Park is a better choice than Goodwin Park because it has the benefit of a 22-stall parking lot.

“Staff feels this is a pretty solid option,” he said, “a great way to start the program.”

Commission members asked that all residents within a 500-foot radius of the park be sent notifications about the proposal and the Feb. 21 meeting.
