Oakdale Public Works Department Cuts the Ribbon on Renovated Shop

The department enclosed a covered entry area that used to be part of the Washington County Hazardous Waste disposal site.

Oakdale's city mechanics now have a workspace big enough for the fire engines and plow trucks that sometimes need repairs.

City officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, Dec. 15, to mark the completion of the remodeling project at Oakdale's that enclosed what used to be an open entryway for Washington County's household hazardous waste disposal site.

In addition to providing space for larger vehicles, the goals of the project were to bring the building—at 1900 Hadley Avenue—up to code, improve energy efficiency and improve air quality, said Oakdale Public Works Director and City Engineer Brian Bachmeier.

The project ended up being within $7,000 of its bid price, Bachmeier said.

Mayor Carmen Sarrack said Rep. Betty McCollum, D-St. Paul, was instrumental in securing federal energy money to install a geothermal system that uses water from a nearby filtration facility to cool parts of the building.
