Poll: Does Oakdale Need a Dog Park?

Oakdale parks commission members said they want to start investigating the possibility of establishing a dog park somewhere in the city.

Oakdale parks commission members said Tuesday they want to look into establishing a dog park somewhere in the city.

“Pets are very important to people,” said parks commission member Tom Erickson at the commission's meeting March 13. “Young couples who are not having children right away, their pets are No. 1, those who can’t have children, older people when their kids move away.”

Commission Chairman Rich Thielman said he agrees that the commission should look into the possibility of a dog park. They'll need to do some research, though, because the idea was shot down by the city council about two years ago, he said.

Finding a location for the dog park was a challenge when it was previously considered, said commission member Bill Rasmussen, but the city needs one, he said, and it’s worth looking into again.

I sit here looking at my house value going down (25K for next year) - my property taxes only go down 25.00 dollars - I'm thinking at this point given the economy the city should not waste "our" money on a dog park.

All u need to create a dog park is to fence off an existing space and add a few garbage cans. A user fee can be created to pay for it, like a $2 entrance fee or parking meters for those who don't walk there. Maybe get creative and add a vending machine with dog treats. Somewhere along Tanners Lake would be nice.

I don't know why we need a special dog park, just bring your dogs over to my yard and let them do their business. That's what my neighbors do.

50th and Hadley has a nice block of property that is city owned? It under the power lines and over the pipelines, and would be an excellent place for a dog park!

I completely agree with bigbern, set it up charging a small entrance or yearly fee and offer vending with a few doggy extras. I've come across too many walkers who seem to be afraid of my liitle english springer spaniel. Dog owners are happy to have a place to let their pups run. Use an area that has little other use. 50th/Hadley is perfect as it already has parking too. YES, Our area would definately put a dog park to good use.
