Spring Load Restrictions in Effect for Twin Cities Haulers

Trucks, rigs and even those with recreational vehicles (RVs) will have to abide by new weight restrictions as the spring thaw impacts state roads.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has determined the ending for Winter Load Increases and start date for Spring Load Restrictions in the Central, North Central and North Frost Zones will be 12:01 a.m. Friday, March 29.

Spring Load Restrictions are already in effect in the South, Southeast and Metro Frost Zones.

Road Restriction maps indicating the locations of weight restricted routes and those state highways open to maximum ten-ton axle weights are listed on the MnDOT Seasonal Load Limits website. Also available is a text list of the restricted segments along with exceptions to the map.

Overweight Permits

Permits for over 80,000 GVW will continue and new permits will be issued if all axle and group weights are legal. Existing middle-range and full-summer overweight permits end when Winter Load Increases are removed. No middle-range or full-summer overweight permits are issued during the Spring Load Restriction period. Middle-range overweight permits become available within each frost zone when Spring Load Restrictions are lifted. Full-summer overweight permits become available within each frost zone starting two to three weeks after Spring Load Restrictions are lifted.

In Wisconsin, The frozen road law in Zone 1 ended at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, March 28. In addition the spring thaw will begin today Zone 1. Zones 2, 3, 4, and 5 are currently in spring thaw.
