District 622 Schools Will Be Closed Tuesday Due to the Cold Temperatures

Wind chills could reach 45 below zero on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Students living in Oakdale and other communities covered by District 622 will have another day off school on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Gov. Mark Dayton closed all public schools on Monday, Jan. 6, due to the extremely low temperatures. The district decided to remain closed on Tuesday.

"This means there will be no school and no afternoon or evening activities for students in School District 622 on Jan. 7," according to a district news release. "Adventure Connection Before and After School Care will also be closed."

The current temperature in Oakdale is 15 degrees below zero, but it feels like 39 degrees below zero. The wind is blowing at approximately 15 mph. The high temperature on Tuesday is expected to be 2 degrees below zero, with a possible wind chill of approximately 45 below zero.

A wind chill warning remains in effect through noon Tuesday.

The following is the message Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius shared with school districts:

Dear Superintendents and Charter School Directors,

Tomorrow morning’s temperatures are forecasted to be in the double digits below zero again, with continued windchill advisories for the entire state until afternoon.

Governor Dayton is leaving the decision about school cancellations for Tuesday to individual school districts. We believe school superintendents are monitoring the temperatures closely and are prepared to communicate with families so they can plan accordingly.

We encourage you, as always, to be mindful about the dangers of even brief exposure to these dangerously low temperatures as you make your decisions.

I am grateful for your efforts on behalf of Minnesota children, not only during this challenging week, but every day.

Brenda Cassellius

If your children are home and a bit bored Monday and Tuesday, you and they can try some of these cold-weather experiments.
