Public Hearing on School District 622 Budget Cuts Tonight

Vote on which budget cuts you would prefer in our poll below.

The District 622 School Board is trying to decide how to cut $4 million from its budget for the 2011-2012 school year, and the public is invited to weigh in on a list of proposed cuts at a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at the Board Room at the District Education Center, 2520 East 12th Ave., North St. Paul.

Based on comments from the last School Board meeting, a proposal to freeze teacher salaries, and an alternative proposal to cut 23.5 full-time employees is likely to be a contentious issue. By doing either, the district would save from $1.3 to $1.4 million—the largest line items on the list.

Because teacher pay is at issue, Oakdale Patch put together a short guide to how and what District 622 teachers get paid.

How teacher pay is determined: Teachers’ pay follows a schedule based on “steps and lanes.” A teacher moves up in lanes by gaining more education, and moves up one step for every year of employment. Moving up in either a step, or a lane, increases the teacher's salary.

Following are some sample salaries based on the schedule found in the teachers’ contract for the 2010-2011 school year:
