Whiz Kids: Skyview Elementary School Student Council

Student Council members volunteer to help others locally and globally.

Oakdale Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Student Council members including: Cisntshas Vang, Caden Thole, Jayden Moan-Bader, Hailey Hurley, Jayden Thieschafer, Dominick Rauch, Matthew Curtice, Lindsay Sandrock, Meghan Axberg, Josslen Thieschafer, Addison Latterell, Breanna Cashin and Megan Hurley.

Accomplishment: These students are working to give back locally and globally by donating time to causes such as Feed my Starving Children and 622 Project Family Connect.

Key to Awesomeness: The race for student council at Skyview Elementary School is not a popularity contest. Students in grades three through five don’t vote for a person, but for the written answers to a series of questions that they like best, without being told who wrote them. Back for its first year after many years of non-existence, the student council has been working to help others in need in and around Oakdale, and all over the world. To help internationally, the group sought and received a grant that paid for busing to Eagan’s Feed My Starving Children site, where they packed meals for starving kids overseas. To help locally, the group promoted the food and toiletry drive for items to be given out to local families in need at April 9. To help draw donations, group members spoke to their own classes and their “buddy classes” in kindergarten through second grade about the drive, and hung posters around the school. In May, the group plans to present what it has been doing at a youth service and leadership confrence.
