Family Events from the City of Oakdale

From kayaking to fireworks, the city has announced a variety of programs.

Oakdale on Monday announced upcoming family-friendly events and activities.

Paddle and Play

Area children will have two outdoor options for testing their kayaking and outdoor skills this summer.

The Oakdale Recreation Department’s day camp, for children 11-13, gives kids a chance to try kayaking and explore the islands and back channels of the St. Croix River.

The camp includes making lunch over a bonfire, geocaching, hiking, and swimming.

Two weeks are offered: July 29 to Aug. 1 and Aug. 5-8.  The cost of $225 includes lunch.

Meanwhile, for teenagers 13-15 there is an overnight “River Trek,” which is two nights and three days (Aug. 12-15).

The group will paddle 28 miles of the St. Croix from Taylor’s Falls to Stillwater. No expertise is needed—counselors teach paddling skills, navigation on the river, and safety.

Participants will camp one night on an island and a second night at a retreat center and then celebrate the trip with a stop at Leo’s Malt Shop in Stillwater.  The cost is $174.

Pick up and drop off for both camps is at the Oakdale Discovery Center, 4444 Hadley Ave.

A variety of food vendors will be on hand, starting at 4 p.m., and the Rockin’ Hollywoods will take the stage at 7 p.m. and play until 10 p.m.

The fireworks show will begin immediately following the concert.

Admission to the Rockin' Hollywoods and fireworks show is free.
