Key to Awesomeness: When North High School senior Michael Wheeler asked Oakdale city staff what he could do for an Eagle Scout project, he got an interesting idea—build an outhouse. Well, it’s really a storage shed that just looks like an outhouse, but the design is fitting because it’s located right next to the historic schoolhouse at the Oakdale Nature Preserve.

Although Wheeler had helped with other Eagle Scout projects in the past, he found that planning the whole thing himself was a little more “excruciating.”

“Once you’re done with the planning phase, you’re supposed to be able to get hit by a bus and have somebody else pick up the project from there,” he said. “You have to get everything exactly right.”

Part of the planning process included looking at safety requirements, he said.

Wheeler has been in scouts since kindergarten, and he stuck with it because of the good friendships he formed through Troop 89, which meets at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi.

In addition to Boy Scouts, Wheeler plays piano. He hasn’t decided on a college yet, but said he’d like to study video game design.
