In all, Minnesota’s prisons house approximately 9,500 adult inmates at an annual cost of approximately $465 million.
You probably know that there are two prisons in Washington County: The Stillwater prison (which is actually in Bayport) and the Oak Park Heights prison. Did you know that there are also eight other prisons in Minnesota? Nine are for men. The state’s only women’s prison is in Shakopee. Why are there so many prisons? Aren’t they all the same? First, understand that a prison is different than a jail. Prisons are set up in a number of different ways, one of the main ways deals with the “custody classification system.” This system differentiates between the levels of security necessary for inmates. In what Oakdale Fire Chief Jeff Anderson called a “minor incident,” crews Thursday afternoon put out a dryer fire at First Nails. The fire was contained to the dryer, but smoke did spread throughout the establishment, Anderson said. The Oakdale Fire Department got the call at about 1:20 p.m. Thursday, May 16, and had the scene cleared by about 3 p.m. There were no injuries, Anderson said. The following information was obtained from recent police reports. Oakdale police received a report that a Quantum Merchant Services employee wrote company checks out to petty cash and used the money, along with a company card, for personal expenses. A miniature pinscher whose owner lives at the 6400 block of Upper 56th Street once again got loose. The owner didn’t want to get out of bed. She was again cited. Two people reported that a man approached them at Tower Park and asked to use one of their cell phones. He then lifted his shirt and brandished a handgun. He did not point it at either person. The suspect gave back the cell phone and left. There was a BB gun found at his home. Police were investigating. Police were called about a man …

The body of a man found in the St. Croix River has been identified as Donald D. Marklowitz Jr., 54, according to a Washington County Sheriff's Office news release issued Thursday. The Washington County Sheriff's Office was called to the 900 block of Quentin Avenue South in Lakeland at about 11:38 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, on a report of a possible deceased body on the shore. When authorities arrived on the scene, they found the body. The body was turned over to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office, which identified the man as Marklowitz, who was last seen in Hudson, Wis., on April 1, according to the release. WCCO-TV ranked 78 Twin Cities-area police departments on the number of speeding tickets per capita issued in 2011. Oakdale ranked 48th. According to WCCO's numbers, the Oakdale Police Department issued 553 speeding tickets in 2011—a per capita breakdown of 0.02. In case you were wondering, the Washington County Sheriff's Office ranked No. 72 of the 78 departments. John David Callinan, 30, faces two felony burglary charges.
Woodbury police in January were granted a 60-day warrant to place a GPS monitor a suspected burglar’s car. The vehicle later that month made several short stops at Woodbury homes during early-morning hours, and two residents later reported vehicle break-ins. Now, John David Callinan, 30, of Oakdale, faces two felony burglary charges. According to the criminal complaint: While the device was in place on a car Callinan is known to frequently drive, the vehicle went through several residential neighborhoods in Woodbury between 2:28 a.m. and 3:51 a.m. on Jan. 25. Investigators with the Washington County Sheriff's Office have determined that the body found in Lakeland appeared to have been in the water for a long period of time and was in a significant state of decomposition,” Commander Brian Mueller said.
A body was found Tuesday morning along the shore of the St. Croix River. The body has not identified at this time. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
