Oakdale Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Michael Wheeler Group: Boy Scout Troop 89 Accomplishment: Wheeler planned and led construction of a storage building near the historic schoolhouse at the Oakdale Nature Preserve as his Eagle Scout project. Key to Awesomeness: When North High School senior Michael Wheeler asked Oakdale city staff what he could do for an Eagle Scout project, he got an interesting idea—build an outhouse. Well, it’s really a storage shed that just looks like an outhouse, but the design is fitting because it’s located right next to the historic schoolhouse at the Oakdale Nature Preserve. Although Wheeler had helped with other Eagle Scout projects in the past, he found that planning the whole thing himself was a little more “…

A local teenager mapped out Oakdale Nature Preserve trails for his Eagle Scout project.
Oakdale Patch Whiz Kid: Tyler Frickson, 12th grade School: Tartan High School Accomplishment: He mapped the paved and grass trails throughout the Oakdale Nature Preserve, and created a series of corresponding trail markers and created a companion map. Key to Awesomeness: If you enjoy using the trails in and around the Oakdale Nature Preserve, you will soon find it much easier and more pleasant to find your way around, thanks to Tyler Frickson's efforts. For his Eagle Scout project, which is in its final approval stages, he created a highly detailed and visual map of all of the trails through the park. After a brainstorming session with Bruce Anderson in Oakdale’s Park and Recreation department to come up with a project that would be …

A local teen oversaw building of a stairway at Holy Cross Lutheran Church to help congregants get to outdoor worship.
Oakdale Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Mitch Rogalsky, 12th grade School: Tartan High School Accomplishment: Mitch designed, planned and oversaw his Eagle Scout project—building stairs and platforms to increase accessibility to the outdoor worship area at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Oakdale. Key to Awesomeness: A scout since first grade, Rogalsky accomplished something that only 4 to 5 percent of Scouts ever complete: the rank of Eagle Scout. His project was a 10-month process, which had to be completed before he turned 18. He first formally presented his idea to the church council and to three high-ranking scout leaders, then planned and obtained specifications, created technical drawings and timelines and made a list of materials and…

Oakdale Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Alick Swiden, 17 Group: Boy Scouts Troop 9112 Accomplishment: Swiden led a team of volunteers who rebuilt the dock at Mud Lake as his Eagle Scout project. Key to Awesomeness: With the weather warming up (at least sporadically), many Minnesotans’ thoughts have turned to enjoying a day at the lake, but Alick Swiden was making preparations for that long before temperatures again reached double digits. Swiden led a group of about 20 volunteers to rebuild a dock at Mud Lake behind Castle Elementary School while its water was still frozen so that the workers could stand on the ice. They replaced most of the dock’s wood and built benches on the dock, and to the side of the dock. Putting woodchips on the trail …

The man and alleged victim were not connected through scouts.
An Oakdale-based Cub Scout pack asked an 18-year-old Eagle Scout to stop volunteering with the pack due to pending charges against him. The Boy Scouts Great Rivers District sent a letter to Matthew D. L. Mueller, 18, asking him to discontinue participation in scouting events with Cub Scout Pack 240 due to pending criminal charges against him alleging that he exposed himself to a 7-year-old-boy, said Great Rivers Senior District Executive Eric McFee. Oakdale Patch is omitting how Mueller was connected with the boy to protect his identity, however the Washington County District Court Complaint does not say the two were acquainted through Boy Scouts. Cub Master Timothy Goebel said parents in the group were shocked to hear of the charges …
