Titans Drop Fifth Game in a Row to No. 1 Hill-Murray

The Pioneers pummeled the Titans 12-0 to improve its winning streak to 13 consecutive games.

The Tartan boys hockey team’s 12-0 loss to Hill-Murray Tuesday night was a game of streaks. The Titans (4-8 in conference; 11-10-1 overall) chalked up its fifth straight game without a win while top-ranked Hill-Murray (13-0 in conference; 20-3-1 overall) improved its winning streak to 13 in a row. The Pioneers used a balanced attack—four goals in each of the three periods—to dispatch the Titans quickly and decisively. Senior forward Ben Bahe scored the first of his two goals just 90 seconds into the game on a Pioneer powerplay. Bahe would go on to notch two goals and two assists in the game. Senior Bob Bruski scored the Pioneers’ second goal 90 seconds later to put the Pioneers ahead 2-0 with just three minutes gone in the first period. “A…

Tartan Hockey Torched 6-1 by Totino-Grace

No. 4 (Class A) Totino-Grace outshot the Titans 42-23 in a lopsided victory.

The Tartan boys hockey team knew it would have to play one of its most disciplined games of the season when it faced off against Totino-Grace on Thursday night. The Eagles are currently ranked fourth among Minnesota's Class A high schools behind St. Thomas Academy, Blake and Hermantown. “We have to play very disciplined hockey tonight,” Tartan co-head coach Steve Romanchuk said before the game. “We have to play our positions without mistakes. We have to be tight. If we play loose in our zone, it could be trouble.” So it came as little surprise when early Titans penalties led to two powerplay goals for Totino-Grace within the first 10 minutes of the game. Junior Andrew McDonald and senior Dan Heck scored the goals for the Eagles. The Eagles…

Tartan Hockey Ends Two-Game Skid With 8-2 Win Over Sibley

Tartan's Jackson cousins lead offensive onslaught with six goals and three assists between them.

The Tartan boys varsity hockey team beat conference foe Henry Sibley 8-2 behind six goals and three assists from cousins Jeff and Jake Jackson. Looking to avenge consecutive losses to St. Thomas Academy and Hill-Murray last week, senior captain Jeff Jackson had two goals and two assists while sophomore cousin Jake racked up four goals and an assist on the night. "It was kind of the Jackson show tonight," Titans head coach Jim McElmury said after the game. "This was an exceptional game for those two and an important win for us. We found ourselves kind of out of our element last week." Jeff Jackson started the scoring for the Titans just four minutes into the game after capitalizing on a perfect pass from fellow captain Nate Straka. Jake …

Tartan Boys Hockey Team Beat by Third-Ranked Hill-Murray Pioneers

Hill-Murray scored five times in the first period.

The Tartan Titans could not hold off the Hill-Murray Pioneers Saturday as the Titans lose 7-2. The third ranked Pioneers are one of the fastest hockey teams in Minnesota. The onslaught included Hill-Murray's 40 shots on goal compared to Tartan’s 11. The game began with two-and-a-half minutes of even play. At two minutes and 44 seconds, the scoring began. Hill-Murray scored five times in the first period, creating a 5-0 deficit for the Titans to make up. The scoring continued as the Pioneers' Loren French scored again making it a 6-0 contest. Tartan answered back with two goals in six minutes by Eric Olheiser and Jeff Jackson. The offensive surge by the Titans was too little, too late. The Pioneers put the nail in the coffin with the final …

Titan Boys Hockey Ties Polars 2-2 in Overtime

Tartan outshot North 42-39 in the game, but failed to capitalize on genuine scoring opportunities.

The Tartan varsity boys hockey team tied arch rival North St. Paul in front of a packed Polar arena and a raucous crowd on Thursday night.  The Titans came out looking unprepared and outmatched in the first period. The Polars' captain Shaun Kelly struck first just four minutes into the period scoring an unassisted goal to put North ahead 1-0.  After outskating the Titans for much of the period, Polar freshman Justin Oliver scored with 4:15 left in the period to give North St. Paul a two-goal advantage.  But the Titans refused to go away.  After aggressive backchecking and a pass from linemate Austin Espelein, senior Tyler Beaulieu scored on a breakaway with two minutes to go to narrow the Polar lead to 2-1.  “This is pretty much what we …

Despite Strong Finish, Tartan Varsity Hockey Loses to Third-Ranked Rochester Lourdes

Inspired goalkeeping and aggressive defense highlight home loss for Titans.

The Tartan boys varsity hockey team played two stellar periods of hockey on Dec. 4 against the Rochester Lourdes Eagles, the team currently ranked third in the state. Unfortunately for the Titans, hockey games have three periods. Tartan lost 3-1 to the non-conference opponent after giving up two goals in the first period – the first of which was scored by junior forward Connor Nellans just 58 seconds after the opening puck dropped. Junior forward Ryan Nicolay scored a shorthanded goal eight minutes later to put Rochester up 2-0 over a Tartan team that began the game looking disoriented and outmatched. "Tartan plays in a good conference. They play a lot of big schools. We expected a great game. We certainly didn't expect to come out 2-0 up …
